The temporary president of St. Claude State University, Larry Dietz, leaves his role early.

Dietz has been a temporary president since last July. His term was supposed to continue.

But in a letter to the campus community on Monday, Dietz announced that he will leave by the end of this year to deal with health challenges in his family.

Scott Olson, the advisor of the Miniesota State Colleges and Universities system, announced that the national research will start immediately for the next SCSU president. He said the goal is to have a new leader in his place by January.

Dietz spent 50 years as a university official, including the President of Illinois State University, before his retirement in 2021. Retire To take ST. Cloud State, which lasted for two years after former SCSU president Robbyn Wacker.

“We have taken many steps in a short period of time, but we have more work that must be done during the next six months to meet the challenges we face,” Dietz said. “I am sure we will face these challenges and SCSU will continue to focus on the future.”

In recent years, it has faced ST. Cloud State Budget Challenges, including software discounts and employee layoffs. The enrollment rate fell from the peak of more than 16,000 students a decade ago to a little more than 10,000 last year.

Olson said that Dietz “helped the university to define and make difficult decisions, always with the aim of strengthening SCSU for the future.” He said that Diets will continue to lead “sympathy, wisdom and humor” in the next few months until a permanent leader is chosen.

Officials expect to share a timetable for the search process in the next few weeks.
