Robert Friedland, billionaire mining businessman, welcomed the pledge of US President Donald Trump to impose a 50 percent tariff on copper imports, on the pretext that local mineral production was “essential for US national security.”

Analysts and other executives questioned the logic of imposing such a high tax when the United States continued to depend on the imports of metal, but the founder of the Ivandoi mines listed in Toronto said that this step was necessary to “wake up people” on America’s weakness.

“There is a new list of critical raw materials without it, you can not do anything in global warming or the global economy, and you have a decisive security vulnerability in national security,” veteran Friedland in the industry told the Financial Times.

“I praise the Trump administration to do what is clear and smart – America needs to produce the metal,” he said.

Copper flow to the United States this year to expectations that Trump will eventually target imports. Consequently, the US mineral prices fell slightly on Wednesday after announcing at $ 5.53 of a pound, but that was still 28 percent for the global standard price in London.

Friedland, 74, has rejected any reaction to the market as “unrelated.” “What is really going on here is that the United States wants the metal to be produced in the United States, refined (in the United States) – not just copper. Copper is a model that is more likely 30 critical minerals.”

It can also be said that the best executive director in North America and one who also maintains strong relations with China and Saudi Arabia, Fredland consulted with various American departments on mining issues. In May, he was among the executives who met Trump, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during the US President’s visit to Riyadh.

Friedland refused to comment on any discussions with US officials, but she praised Trump’s position towards the mining sector.

“This administration is a huge breath of fresh air,” he said. “Miners were beaten with an ugly stick for 50 years, as if mining was a racist sin, yet everyone wants an electric car, a microwave oven or a washing machine.”

The Minister of Interior at Trump Doug Burgum told mining companies in March that he wanted them “Lee, a child, Lee” as part of an attempt to break dependence on mineral imports from China.

The administration has since moved to accelerate the permit operations for some projects, including the Al -Nahhas mine, which has been postponed long in Arizona.

Evanho, the United States, is also planning in Friedland to develop a copper mine in Arizona named Santa Cruz.

Fredland said that increasing domestic production will reduce dependence on the United States on imports and also that the US military has a safe access to the necessary copper of ammunition and devices during what many analysts expect to be a period of increasing military spending around the world.

He added: “We move from the integrated global economy in a timely manner … to the global economy in the event of its occurrence, and the administration that provokes customs tariffs on critical raw materials is a step in a state of just a case.” “If we have a war, we must have enough raw materials to deal with it.”
